I bought a little garden home in Northport, Alabama, on April 29, 2011 - 2 days following one of the worst natural disasters (a EF4 tornado) in Alabama's history. Needless to say, I am very thankful to have a home and hope to evolve it so it not only reflects my style and tastes but, more important serves as a positive, amniotic environment where I can "charge my batteries" and thereby continue investing myself in my career and efforts to contribute to my community. I'm a Cancer. The nest is important!

July 13, 2011
(Note: I wish I could post entries under this page, but it doesn't appear that's possible, so I'm just updating.)
I completed the popcorn ceiling scrape, retextured (with a bloody putty knife ... I logged at least 14 hours just spackling) the ceiling, and have installed a new ceiling fan. Lots of elements are missing, including a headboard I'm refinishing, end tables I've purchased, and a rug I'm shopping for that will anchor the bed. Obviously I need to clip off "do not remove" tags too! I'll try to post a "before" pic as well.

September 20, 2011
It has been awhile since I've updated The Empire's page. It seems slow-going, but I've actually made quite a few improvements since July. I will chronicle them below, but do know this list is ever-growing:
| Concrete pad poured for hot tub. Need to update pic ... It's all fab now! In fact, I'm posting at 6 a.m. but as soon as it's "light enough," I'm going to update ASAP. I swear it's not as Sanford & Son as it looks here. |
| Refinished headboard my friend Nathan gave me, it's from the 1950's. |
| Refinished dresser and mirror also given to me by Nathan. The Mirror doesn't lie: I need to address the closet doors! |
| Decided to spray paint the black refrigerator silver to match dishwasher. Have edited countertop and am contemplating new backsplash involving mirrors, and eventually new countertops in a much lighter color. My ultimate goal/dream is a glass-front commercial grade refrigerator, but only if it's eco-friendly. Otherwise, I might join the minions in the stainless steel arena. |
| Stay out of my Empire, trespassers! The ADT sign is mandatory. But I have removed/relocated all of the "English Garden" elements and have potted the clumping bamboo as a focal point. I inherited the concrete landscape edging which I'm going to repurpose elsewhere in the yard as a small system of baffles to aid in erosion control, and think I'm going to plant a ground cover in the bed. |
